Klein Collins BASE Teacher Just ‘Getz’ It

Klein Collins BASE Teacher Just ‘Getz’ It

In Klein ISD, we love our phenomenal educators and honor them daily. During this year’s Teacher Appreciation Week, we want to recognize our educators like Klein Collins Special Education teacher Mr. Doug Getz, who gives his all to his students.

Mr. Getz has worked at Klein Collins in the SPED department for the last four years as a BASE teacher and has been a standout educator. He takes a relationship-driven approach to education to truly connect with students.

“I firmly believe that building a relationship based on respect, trust, and empathy is the first step to being able to help the kids,” Mr. Getz said. “Because of this, leading by example is very important to me.”

As a student at Klein High School, he was inspired by his football coach, Coach Allen, to take the path toward education and coaching. He served as a coach for 23 years before changing his focus to teaching. He realized his desire to work with SPED students and students needing behavioral help while earning a Master’s in Mental Health counseling.

“The BASE program is a support system for kids who need a little extra help from time to time with behavior, Mr. Getz said. “Those are the areas we focus on each day.  We have a great team. We all work together to assist students when they need extra support.”

While Mr. Getz is the teacher in the classroom, he notes that his time with his students is also a learning experience for him.

“They teach me valuable things each day about their likes and dislikes, struggles, successes, and resilience,” Mr. Getz said. “They teach me about myself, and where I need to grow to be better for them.”

Mr. Getz knows he works with a unique set of students and realizes there’s more to being a role model and teacher than books. He particularly enjoys their conversations, where they get to know each other personally.

“I love the times I witness the kids succeeding in any of the areas we work on.  I also enjoy having light-hearted conversations with them between all the other stuff,” Mr. Getz said. “It’s during those times we get to know each other beyond behavior and academics.”

This week and every week, we celebrate the wonderful people who call Klein, TX home – the #greatestofallklein, our teachers!
